Second Coming

After a hiatus of two years,Sai Deodhar returns to television with Kashi

It’s been two years since Sai Deodhar was last seen on the small screen, but the actor says she was hardly out of the loop. “I was doing things other than daily soaps,” she says, listing all the things that had her attention during this period. “I was busy doing a film,Gharounda, directed by my mother Shrabani Deodhar,a Bengali dance show and a Marathi show,” she says, before she halts at the project that will see her make a comeback to television. Kashi – Ab Na Rahe Tera Kaagaz Kora on Imagine has the actor playing a village belle and a mother to the main protagonist Kashi (played by child actor Jannat). “It’s set in Bihar and captures the strong class divide existing in the remote pockets of this region,” says Deodhar, adding,“It is the story of this girl who wants to study but can’t,because of the class discrimation. I,as her very determined mother, encourage her to pursue her dreams,” she reveals.

Industry rumours have it that Deodhar’s role is only a guest appearance, and her character will be killed off to introduce a step-mother to take the story forward, but the actor chooses to remain tight-lipped about it. “I don’t want to talk about it at this point. All I can say is that there will be less of the usual crying and quibbling, and more of relevant issues,” she says. In fact,it was the slightly off-the-cuff role that got her attention. “I’ve always been playing the urban girl, from Saara Akash to Ek Ladki Anjaani Si. This was a chance to experiment and try something different. I even practised for the Bihari dialect,” she says.

The actor admits that she has been in an experimental mode,of late. Her mother’s movie Gharounda, which will release this year, was almost a family affair—father Debu was the cinematographer, while her husband Shakti Anand acted in it. “I always wanted to be in a film with my entire family in it,and when Gharounda happened I didn’t want to let the opportunity go,” she says. Much like Hrishikesh Mukherji’s films,Gharounda explores marital relationships in a light-hearted manner, through the lives of a couple on the lookout for the perfect house.

In the meanwhile,Deodhar is also trying her hands at direction. She has written, directed and produced a children’s short film. “It’s still in post-production,so I’ll talk about it in a while,” she says, putting the subject on hold.

Despite dabbling with movies,Deodhar says she has a soft corner for television still. “I’ll always be interested in direction,in writing and making films, but television is very dear to me. It gave me my identity, financial stability and I owe my success to it,” she says.

Kashi will be telecast every Monday on Imagine.
