Sec 17 parking: To prevent token loss, contractors charging additional fee

Plagued by the loss of tokens, parking contractors in Sector 17 seemed to have devised a unique solution to the problem.

Plagued by the loss of tokens, parking contractors in Sector 17 seemed to have devised a unique solution to the problem. On Monday, the contractors began collecting an additional Rs 10 from commuters, which is returned when the token is handed over at the exit.

The token system was started at two paid parking lots in Sector 17,a few weeks back. People parking their vehicles here were given the tokens along with parking slips. The tokens were meant to ensure that the parking lots only allow the number of vehicles they can handle.

Since the system was introduced, however, the initial brass tokens went missing, with contractors complaining that people were not returning them.

Since the parking lots are manned only till 11 pm,there was no attendant to collect the tokens after that time. The brass tokens were then replaced by plastic tokens. Over the past few days, however,no tokens were being issued resulting in chaos at the parking lots, with contractors letting in more vehicles than the lots could hold.

The contractors have now begun collecting Rs 10 instead of the Rs 5 as parking fee. The balance is returned at the exit after the token is collected.

This, however, seems to have its own problems. With most having to wait at the exit for the refund, some just drove away.

The attendants at the parking lot on the other hand, claim that the system helps in ensuring that the tokens are returned.
