Sangrur dharna: Rs 10 lakh compensation given to deceased farmer’s family

Farmer Preetam Singh was killed during a clash between farmers and policemen in Sangrur district on Monday amid protests over the detention of several farm leaders ahead of a proposed rally in Chandigarh.

The Sangrur administration late on Thursday afternoon gave Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family of a farmer, who was killed on August 21 during a protest in Longowal town.

Farmer Preetam Singh was killed during a clash between farmers and policemen in Sangrur district on Monday amid protests over the detention of several farm leaders ahead of a proposed rally in Chandigarh (on Tuesday) to press for compensation for crop loss in the recent floods in the state.

As per details, Preetam’s body will now be cremated on Friday afternoon at his village, Mander Kalan. The police have also started releasing the farmers who had been put under preventive arrests on August 21 as well as August 22.

“All arrested farmers are likely to be released by tonight and we will lift our 17 dharnas at different locations as soon as the last of them walk out of jail,” said Manjit Singh Niyal, president of Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Azad.

Niyal added ,”Around 30 farmers arrested by Sangrur police have been released. Out of these, 28 were preventive arrests, while two people had been arrested under attempt to murder charges for allegedly causing injuries to Deepinder Singh Jeji, Station House Officer of Sunam during a clash between the police and farmers.”

Dr Narinder Bhargav, DIG border range, while talking to The Indian Express on Thursday said that out of the Rs 10 lakh compensation given by the administration, Rs 5 lakh will be from the ex-gratia fund, with the remaining money being contributedby the Red Cross.

Bhargav added ,”Another round of meeting of 16 farmer unions with the Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh, is scheduled for September 4 at Punjab Bhawan . We have held two meetings with the coordination committee members of the 16 farmer unions of Punjab on Wednesday and Thursday in Longowal.”

Meanwhile the police have also assured to provide Rs 2 lakh each to seriously injured farmers and Rs 1 lakh each to farmers with minor injuries. According to Manjit Singh Niyal, two farmers had sustained serious injuries.

On Thursday, the local Tehsildar handed over two cheques to the family members of Preetam Singh. Both cheques were in the name of Ravinder Singh, son of Preetam Singh.
