On a day when as many as 420 runs were scored and 17 wickets fell,it was hard to point out a performance that could be termed as match-winning. However,Sandeep Bhattacharya,who added vital 56 runs to team’s total score and then returned to bowl and ended up picking three wickets for 19 runs delivered when it mattered the most and left a deep impression on the spectators who had come there to watch the final match. His performance ensured that GGD SD College,Sector 32,win the final by defeating the opponent DAV College,Chandigarh,by 12 runs to claim the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket (Men) A-Division championship at the PU grounds on Saturday.
Looking at the conditions and the state of the pitch,GGD SD College skipper had no second thoughts and decided to bat first. His decision proved right as the team amassed 216 in 39.1 overs. Michael Vishal was in blistering form as he played some exquisite drives to notch up his half century in style. He scored at a brisk rate to ensure a healthy run rate for the batting side. He made 68. Meanwhile,Sandeep’s knock helped SD College touch the magical figure of 200-mark with some audacious batting. Vikas picked up 4 for 45,while Jagdeep bagged 2 for 36.
Chasing the target,DAV College were well on target but lost momentum in the middle after losing few quick wickets. However,Saurabh Subharwal’s knock of 61 runs kept the hopes alive but when he was castled by an SD College bowler the remaining batsmen just tried to delay the inevitable. Sandeep and Varun bowled a superb line and length and picked up three wickets each to send the half of the team back to the pavilion.
Meanwhile,SGGS College recorded a three-wicket win over SCD Government College,Ludhiana in a match played for the third place. Batting first,SCD College posted 127 in 34.3 overs. Atul top scored with 21 runs. Jaskaran picked up three wickets,while Surinder and Gurpreet bagged two wickets each. In reply,the SGGS College made 128 for 7 in 33.4 overs. Gurpreet top scored with 48 runs. Amandeep,Onkar and Aman took two wickets each.
