Walk-in interviews were being held to ensure smooth functioning of centres
The striking employees of the e-sampark centres today disrupted the interview process at the Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh (SPIC). Walk-in interviews were being held here to hire new employees. The employees are on strike since Friday demanding a hike in their salaries among other demands.
Drama was witnessed today SPIC in Sector 12 when a large number of the striking employees gathered and disrupted the interview process. The officials had decided to hold walk-in interviews in order to ensure smooth functioning of sampark centres. The employees entered into arguments with the staff about the interviews being conducted.
The strike by the employees has affected work at the sampark centres across the city. Earlier, the sampark centres were being managed by a vendor: SQL Star Limited Company. When the contract of the company ended and a new vendor could not be found the employees were brought under the ambit of SPIC after giving a 10 per cent pay raise. The employees are now demanding a hike in pay, more holidays and better work conditions.
The UT Administration is in the process of hiring a new vendor. Till this is done, there is a need for employees to run the sampark centres. While on Friday these were managed by the staff of SPIC,the sampark centres remained closed on Saturday.
Director IT,UT Administration Yogesh Kumar said,The walk-in interviews were being held as we need to ensure the smooth functioning of the sampark centres. The city residents are being inconvenienced due to the strike. The striking employees should realise that time is required for meeting demands like hike in salary. It cannot be done instantly. The sampark centres would remain open on Monday.
A large number of services are provided through the sampark centres. These include payment of bills, submission of forms, etc.
