Based on an RTI application,an activist has accused Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja of “stepmotherly” treatment towards Panchkula, that falls in her Ambala parliamentary constituency.

The RTI reply shows that Selja didn’t spend any money from her MPLADS funds in Panchkula district in 2010-11. Even in earlier years, the money spent here was almost one-third the money spent in Ambala district and less than half the allocation for Yamunanagar district — which also fall under Selja’s constituency.

Under the MPLADS or MP Local Area Development Scheme,Rs 2 crore is given every year to each MP to spend in their constituencies.

From 2004-05 to 2010-11,Ambala got Rs 7.24 crore, with 540 works completed and 38 in progress. Yamunanagar got Rs 4.47 crore, with 354 works completed and 60 in progress. On the other hand, during the same period,Panchkula got Rs 1.53 crore, with 93 works completed and 13 in progress.

Vijay Bansal, who belongs to Panchkula and filed the RTI,said: “Our district is also backward and has hilly areas. She (Selja) was not able to get even a single university or technical college, and did not offer any stimulus package to the HMT factory in Pinjore.”

BJP Treasurer Gian Chand Gupta said even the Haryana government had not announced a single big project for Panchkula. “Kumari Selja, despite being a Central minister, could not do anything. It is our bad luck that we have such leaders.”
