RITES to help UT resolve traffic problem

Soon, traffic snarls at the one of the busiest junctions in the city, the Tribune roundabout, which witnesses traffic jams on either side on any given day, will be a thing of the past. This is because the UT Administration, after toying with various ideas, has once again decided to find a solution to this perennial problem.

Sources in the UT Administration say that the officials have decided to seek the help of the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) for identifying the traffic problems and possible solutions to the problem of the area.

Prior to this, the UT Administration had even proposed an underpass to be constructed there, but even that proposal never saw the light of day.

Also,a bypass road was proposed, connecting the Ambala-Chandigarh highway via Daria village for which land was to be acquired to ease out the traffic congestion on the Tribune Junction stretch.

Now,the UT Administration wants RITES to first conduct a comprehensive study on the traffic movements on all the sides of the junction including peak-hour traffic followed by possible solutions on what could be done to address the increasing snarls and chaotic situation.

Reportedly, the officials are even going to seek suggestion from the RITES body on reviving the proposal of having an underpass at this critical junction.

In fact,RITES had in the past prepared a Comprehensive Mobility Plan for the Chandigarh Urban Complex, which was junked.

In the Comprehensive Mobility Plan submitted to the UT Administration almost five years ago,RITES had stated that the Tribune Chowk’s average daily traffic volume is on the higher side as compared to the other busy roads in the city.

Officials said that the RITES body would prepare a detailed report and a plan so as to help to alleviate the traffic congestion at Tribune Chowk by looking into the feasibility of the past proposals of underpass,BRT (Bus Rapid Transport) corridor, new links and bypass, among others on the long stretch.
