True to their billings as the top players, the seeded players came up with excellent performances to claim titles in respective categorries in the LD Kapoor Memorial Total Tennis Tournament played at the YMCA Total Tennis Academy,Sector 11,on Monday. Rishabh Sharda, the top seed in boys’ U-10,was the first to write the title in his name.
Continuing with his good form,Rishabh continued to impress all with his skills. Not only he displayed a controlled game but he was also at his aggressive best while beating Anmol Rattan 6-0,7-6 (7-3) in the final. After getting a thrashing in the first set,Anmol played more confidently in the second set and the match went into a tie-breaker where Rishabh held his nerves and won the match.
Meanwhile,Nihit Rawal justified his seeding as the top player in boys’ U-12 category by defeating another upcoming player,Sagar Bains,in the final 6-2,6-3. Nihit played some good shots on the court and sealed the match in his favour with a comfortable margin.
However,it was the boys’ Under-14 final that threw surprises aplenty. Playing for the title, both Rahul Seth and Vikas Berwal indulged in an interesting match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes. Rahul broke Vikas in the ninth game to take 5-4 lead in the first set and held his serve with four set points to take the first set by 6-4. Vikas then changed his game plan and played consistently to take the second set without any trouble to level the score 6-2. In a do-or-die third set, both the players held their service game. Rahul started playing a mixed game to break the rythm of a tired Vikas in the final set to take the game, set and the match. The final score read 6-4,2-6,6-2 in Rahul Seth’s favour.
Aviraj Kamboj, the eight seed in boys’ U-18 age group category, won the match without any resistance from Raghav Talwar. Swiftly moving all around the court,Aviraj took just 45 minutes to win the final match 6-3,6-2.
In the girls’ Under-12 final,Arushi Kakkar overpowered an inexperienced Khushi Jain 4-1 ,4-0. A nervous Khushi who was playing her first finals, could not stop Kakkar from winning the one-sided final. Similarly,Jasmine showed her powerful groundstrokes to outclass Reva without any problem and won the trophy after winning the match 6-2,6-1.
