Right wear

No more waking up early in the morning to catch the school bus.

College freshers are busy revamping their wardrobe

No more waking up early in the morning to catch the school bus. More importantly, never again slipping into the bland school uniform. For those about to enter college, life feels like a fresh breath of freedom. And now that the formalities are over, shopping is the topmost priority for those planning to enter college.

Youngsters are shopping for new clothes, new accessories, new shoes and new bags with a mad fervour in shopping areas like Sector 17,Sector 22 and DT Mall. According to Meenakshi, manager,Espirit store in Sector 17,“Youngsters have been thronging our store and they generally buy a lot of casual wear. Girls buy a lot of mini skirts, hot pants in bright colours, basic tees, racerbacks. We also have girls buying jumpsuits and playsuits; our flip-flops and bags are a big hit too. When it comes to guys,we have shirts in checks. We are also noticing a high sale in basic tees.”

We asked Jasroop Chauhan, who has just passed out from Sacred Heart School,Sector 26 and is planning to pursue law from Panjab University about her purchases. “I just started shopping, and as the weather is very hot,I’m more inclined on buying capris and skirts. All my tops are summery too, mostly soft pastel shades.” For her shopping doesn’t pertain to one hotspot. She says,“I picked up my accessories from various places, its all about mix and match.”

Shopkeepers in Sector 22 Chandigarh said the trend is towards short kurtis,T-shirts and capris. Another fresher Amrit Ahluwalia who wants to be a fashion merchandiser and has already set her eyes on the Fashion Designing Deptt. at Panjab University has a very different take on fashion. “Basically,I shop from various places. I love shopping from Delhi boutiques; one can find some unique pieces there but I feel that it’s all about how you carry the whole outfit than the brand itself.” She further adds that when it comes to accessories,Sector 22 market is worth searching for.

“Accessories like hair clips and scrunchies, bracelets and anklets are very popular among young girls,as is silver sterling jewellery,” says Chetan Kumar of Jewels in Sector 11,Chandigarh. Raghav Sharma, who has ranked 638 in his AIEEE is not much of a shopping person but believes that college is a new life altogether and deserves attention. “I’m not much of a shopping person but the little I have done is mostly limited to shirts,T- shirts and jeans. Guys don’t have as many options as the girls do.”

Kapsons store manager Sheenam tells us this summer has seen brisk sales with a lot of youngsters coming in. “Guys are mostly shopping for shirts and tees from Tommy Hilfiger and FCUK with trousers and denims being quite a rage. For girls we have FCUK dresses,Sisley pastel shade shirts, while capris and bags of CK are in demand.”

Tarandeep Kaur who intends to take admission in MCM DAV College says,“Kurtis are the best bet in summer. I prefer Indian dressing and kurtis with jeans. I pick up accessories from various places and exhibitions.”

At Fab India in Sector 9,the staff tells us,“Young girls buy a lot of cotton tunics, kurtas both long and short to wear with jeans. Our tote bags and ethnic footwear especially kohlapuris and juttis are quite popular. Our trousers and capris are liked by youngsters.”

Apeksha who wants to get into S.D college says,“My shopping ends at Sector 17. I shop mostly from Espirit,United Colors of Benetton & Kapsons. This season I’ll be wearing comfy cotton, linen and capris.”

Shopping is always fun and coupled with the excitement of beginning a fresh chapter in one’s life,it does become irresistible.
