With a revised menu and introduction of new food items,mid-day meals will soon cease to be a drab affair comprising dalia and dal-chawal. The UT Education department is all set to introduce a thought-out list of food items that aim at providing wholesome and nutritious meals. There are around 3,000 students from over 100 schools who are covered under the scheme.
While the earlier menu comprised mainly of chana, porridge, rice and milk, the new menu will also have seasonal vegetables.
The idea is to provide complete nutrition to students. Apart from carbohydrates, that formed a major part of the previous menu, the new one will also give essential vitamins and minerals, said Director Public Instructions (Schools) Samwartak Singh.
Rajma-chawal,seasonal fruits, milk products and nuts too have found their way to the new menu. Steps will also be taken to ensure that meals are cooked and transported in a clean environment and hygiene standards are maintained.
The main beneficiaries students seem to be happy with the new development.
Eating porridge everyday had become very boring. Now that new food items like rajma will be served to us,having meals in school will be fun, said Simarjit,a student.
Another student Ankur Sharma said: There are not many students who eat mid-day meals. With new items available,I hope my classmates too will have lunch in school rather than eating in the canteen.
