Rain exposes crumbling state of Mohali’s only medical college
The incident not only revealed the grim ground reality of the hospital but also raised serious questions about repeated government claims of improving healthcare facilities.

Mohali’s only medical college, the Dr B R Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), came to a standstill after a brief spell of rain, exposing its fragile infrastructure. Rainwater leaked through the roof, flooding the emergency ward and several adjoining rooms.
The incident not only revealed the grim ground reality of the hospital but also raised serious questions about repeated government claims of improving healthcare facilities.
The matter gained urgency after the Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi shared videos of the waterlogging, prompting swift intervention from the district administration. On Monday morning, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal inspected the hospital. She expressed strong displeasure over the leaking roof of the under-construction OPD wing and the incomplete rainwater drainage system.
“Immediate and concrete steps must be taken to ensure that rainwater does not enter the hospital premises,” Mittal told AIIMS Director-Principal Dr Bhavneet Bharti and SMO Dr Paramindarjeet on site. “This is a matter of safety for both patients and staff, and any negligence will not be tolerated,” she stressed.
Paramindarjeet explained that the new OPD wing’s rainwater drainage system has not yet been connected to the hospital’s main drainage line, which led to the waterlogging. “We have already informed the Punjab Health Systems Corporation regarding this issue,” he said.
Later, the DC summoned Public Health Department officials to her office and issued strict instructions to find a permanent solution to the drainage problem at the earliest so that “such an embarrassing situation does not occur again in the future.”
