The annual elections of the Executive Committee of Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) are going to be held Thursday at the Bhatnagar Auditorium in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Panjab University (PU).
The committee comprises five office-bearers, namely president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer. All faculty members of the university regional centres, Department of Evening Studies and Department of Correspondence Studies who have registered themselves as members of PUTA, will be voting.
Professor Akshaya said, “We have divided our priorities on the basis of long-term goals and immediate goals. Our immediate priorities will focus on promotion of teachers under CAS, additional increments to MTech/LLM and PhD professors, senior professorship for teachers, direct recruitment against vacant positions, among others. In the long run, we will work towards getting a central status for the varsity, improvement of the university’s financial status, representation of teachers in the administration and enhancement of the retirement age.”

Last year, Professor Rajat Sandhir from the Department of Biochemistry headed the Executive Committee. Under Professor Sandhir, the Child Care Leave system was approved, streamlining of pension procedures for teachers was done and non-compounded PhD increments were provided. This year, Professor Jagdish Rai from the Department of Forensic Sciences is an Independent candidate for the presidential post.
