Stating that the Punjabi University was a victim of several irregularities of former functionaries, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema Friday said that education should never be under any debt and no stone will be left unturned for the betterment of the universities.

Speaking to media while listing government’s achievements on completing one year, Cheema, while responding to a question about patiala-based university’s fiscal health, said that it was suffering because of irregularities committed by former Vice Chancellors as they had recruited non-teaching staff who were not needed.

“A Vice Chancellor wanted a driver recruited. When he was told that there was no vacancy, he asked the university authorities to buy a bus to accommodate him. Things have come to such a pass now that the university is burdened with salaries,” said Cheema.

He accused previous governments of putting colossal debt on the university due to their vested interests and massive irregularities in the functioning in the past.
