Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains Saturday announced that contractual teachers working in the state’s education department can apply for the State Awards conferred by the government on Teachers’ Day (September 5). This includes education providers, teachers who come under the categories of IE, EGS, STR, and AIE, and Special Inclusive Teachers.

Bains said the government has recognised the significant contributions of these teachers who have been working tirelessly within the department for a long time.

He added that the previous governments had “undermined the respect and honour of these teachers” by referring to them as ‘temporary teachers’, and had also caused financial distress for the teachers by not providing regular salaries. Bains said that the AAP government in Punjab has regularised the services of 12,710 teachers and provided them with higher salaries as well.

He said, “These teachers also deserve recognition similar to other teachers and have the right to apply for awards. Till now, the ‘State Award’ was not extended to them, which was incorrect.  Therefore, five special awards have been introduced for teachers in this category.”

Bains said that the portal to apply will remain open till August 18.
