‘Punjab Police ill-trained to handle online hate speech cases against Sikhs’: SGPC questions DGP claim that 120 police personnel given advanced training

According to Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandak Committee, the Punjab Police are not trained enough to deal with organised hate crime and speeches against Sikh community, its principles, and SGPC.

Punjab PoliceThe SPC said that so far no concrete action has been taken on the number of complaints filed to Amritsar police by SGPC members, despite concrete evidence.

Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) has questioned the efficiency of training being imparted to police officials to tackle online hate speeches as Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Saturday said that the police were gearing up to tackle new-age crimes.

DGP posted a video on ‘X’ and said that Punjab Police was gearing up to tackle new age crimes.

“28 new Cybercrime Police Stations have been notified and established across #Punjab. 120 police personnel have been given advanced training in cybercrime investigation. @CyberCrimePbInd is working round-the-clock to take immediate action against #CyberFraud,” the DGP stated.

Reposting the DGP video on X later in the day, SGPC said, “Respected @DGPPunjabPolice Mr Gaurav Yadav Ji, it was long needed that @PunjabPoliceInd start taking serious action in cases of cyber crime with some initiatives. But as per our experience so far while dealing with Punjab Police, in organised hate crime and speech against Sikh community, SGPC, its office-bearers & Sikh principles, it seems state police officers are not trained enough to deal with such cases.”

The Sikh body pointed out that a number of social media using hate mongers with known and unknown identities, ghost accounts are using foreign land as safe haven to spread hatred against Sikh community in Punjab and India besides provoking enmity between communities. The SPC said that so far no concrete action has been taken on the number of complaints filed to Amritsar police by SGPC members, despite concrete evidence.

“Hate is also spread from within the country from verified known and unknown handles having large reach, but it seems the state police have no plan to stop and tackle it. Hope the SGPC complaints are acted upon at the earliest,” said SGPC in the post.
