Punjab Cong suggests Capt’s name

Senior leaders of the Punjab Congress have now suggested the candidature of former CM Capt Amarinder Singh for Parliamentary elections.

Senior leaders of the Punjab Congress have now suggested the candidature of former CM Capt Amarinder Singh for Parliamentary elections.

Notably, talks of leader of Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal’s candidature from Sangrur have also been doing the rounds. In the last one week,Bhattal, state Congress Chief Mohinder Singh Kaypee and former PPCC president Shamsher Singh Dullo have met senior AICC leaders, including Punjab in-charge Mohsina Kidwai,in New Delhi.

A top Punjab Congress leader, confirming the development, said Amarinder would be best suited to win a seat, which would eventually help the Congress gain numbers in the overall tally. “What we have suggested is that all senior winnable Congress leaders, including Amarinder Singh, should be considered for the party ticket,” he said.

However, despite the “recommendation”,the AICC,sources said, was unlikely to even spare a thought to this plan. Amarinder is presently the chairman of the election campaign committee. Senior State Congress leaders said the high command was yet to take a final call on whether to allow Rajya Sabha members and party’s state presidents to contest the elections.
