In the coming academic session in August, students of Panjab University can look forward to a pleasant change in the way examinations are conducted. For,at a meeting on Monday, the PU authorities gave their nod to the long-pending proposal which allows students access to their answersheets at both the university level and in internal examinations.
Once implemented, students would be shown their answersheets, which would have to be returned immediately after perusal. Their doubts,if any, would be clarified on the spot.
This process was already being followed by the science departments and the University Institute of Engineering and Technology for the last two years but has now been extended to all the departments in the university.
Students are quite upbeat about the decision saying it would usher in an era of transparency in the examination system. Karan,a student of the Department of Laws, told Newsline: Besides ensuring a transparent examination system, the step will help us rectify certain recurrent errors which we might be committing while writing answers.
Others believe the decision will strengthen the student-teacher bond. Professor Ronki Ram,Chairperson of the Political Science Department, said: The decision was long pending and very eagerly awaited. It will definitely make teachers more cautious while evaluating answers.
The coming session also heralds a uniform internal assessment system and a semester system in all the departments of the university. A final decision on this was taken today at the Syndicate meeting as well.
Also, another long-pending demand relating to evaluation of teachers by students was accepted by the Syndicate today and referred to a committee. Other significant proposals taken at the meeting include attendance for students at the departmental level to be considered final and only special cases to be sent to the Syndicate and Vice-Chancellor for reconsideration.
A proposal to include the Supreme Court guidelines and names of all students caught ragging in the session in the university handbook of information was also discussed. It was proposed that the names of students be mentioned with their departments and the quantum punishment awarded to them.
The decisions taken today will be discussed in the Syndicate meeting to be held on 23 May and go for final approval at the Senate meeting scheduled for May 30.
Mondays meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Profession R C Sobti.
He said: A few decisions which required discussion before implementation were taken up today. They are now ready to be implemented in the new academic session.
