Taking note of the call by teachers for amendments in the selection procedure of PhD scholars in Panjab University (PU),the varsity has now proposed to make interviews the sole criterion for enrolment of research scholars after they have qualified in the entrance test conducted by the varsity.
The recommendations have come after a number of teachers raised concerns about the quality of research scholars getting admission in the university. The teachers pointed out that while the interview being conducted has been reduced to be a mere formality, they were also critical about the process of selecting candidates on the basis of their academic scores in post-graduation and not on research aptitude.
Meanwhile, some of the PhD applicants had also argued that students who somehow manage to get good marks in post-graduation,get admitted, while those who really want to do research work are unable to do so because of their comparatively low academic scores.
As per the recommendations proposed by the committee constituted by university, the enrolment of the research scholars who will qualify the PU entrance test will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interview. However, candidates who have qualified UGC NET and JRF will directly be enrolled for PhD.
Performance of the candidate will be examined on three parameters, which include vacant seat in the department, students area of specialisation and mutual consent of both the supervisor and the student, said Professor Rajesh Gill. It is imperative to determine if the candidate has an research aptitude or not, then only a supervisor can select a student. We want to prefer quality over quantity of research, Professor Gill added.
As per the current procedure of selection, students who have qualified the PU entrance test, appear in the interview, which, however is not given any weightage. The merit list of students is prepared on the basis of academic scores of post-graduation,a step which has been inviting criticism from various quarters.
It is significant to note that these recommendations are expected to be discussed in the next meeting of the Syndicate, and if they are approved, the revised selection procedure will be functional from the next academic session.
