PU online attendance not yet ready

The Panjab University (PU) authorities are unsure about enforcing the online attendance system in the new academic session due to a lack of computers in certain departments.

The Panjab University (PU) authorities are unsure about enforcing the online attendance system in the new academic session due to a lack of computers in certain departments. Also, the old-school attitude of many professors towards computers is another factor causing its implementation to be delayed.

Three years ago,PU authorities had directed the departments to start marking attendance electronically, but has failed to implement the system holistically.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline,Dean,University Instructions (DUI) Prof R K Kohli said,“The varsity is in a transition period. Authorities are working on the issues that are acting as stumbling blocks.”

The social sciences department said they do not have sufficient computers, resulting in theor failure to abide by the new system of online attendance.

Upon being questioned,Kohli said,“We had collated the data regarding surplus items including computers and furniture in order to optimally utilize resources . We will shift surplus computers to the departments that need them.”

Certain departments including the Department of Computer Sciences and Technology,University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET),University Institute of Engineering and Technology and School of Communication Studies have implemented the online attendance system.

A demonstration was held in Law Auditorium about how to mark online attendance. The demonstration was ordered by the former Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti and was attended by the teaching faculty.

Moreover, there are several teachers mostly in the languages, evening studies and social sciences departments that are not technology savvy. Hence, they do not favour the new system.

President,Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA),Mohammed Khalid said,“For marking online attendance, the university has to think of certain factors. All the teachers on campus do not have computers and some are not tech savvy. The internet server of the varsity has a weak signal at times.”
