Around twenty-six visually impaired students were awarded scholarships worth Rs 9,000 per annum on Friday by the National Federation for Blind at the Panjab University (PU) campus.
Taking note of the demand of the federation,the university decided to set up a separate block for the visually impaired in the library where software will be installed enabling students to listen to the contents in the book.
The chief guest on the occasion,PU Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti and wife Professor Vipin Sobti appraised the students and motivated them to study further keeping in tune with the aim of the award ceremony.
Professor R C Sobti said: The university has set up a department of Disability Studies and we are just awaiting the final nod from the Centre. Meanwhile,we have already decided to extend free education for visually impaired students along with free hostel facility.
He added,Funds are not an issue and I will try my best to fulfill all demands being put forth by the federation.
The V-C also stated that he had appointed a physically challenged and another visually-impaired lecturer at the UBS regional centre in Ludhiana against the open seats.
A victory over all odds
Saniya Jain was among the students who were awarded during the function. Having completed her BEd,Saniya is at present pursuing MA in Music from the Government College in Amritsar and further aims to acquire a PhD degree in the subject. Being an all rounder,Saniya has been a regular participant in extra-curricular activities including debates and declamations. Visually impaired since childhood,Saniya shared her struggles on the occasion.
I do not regret anything but I hope that people are more empathetic towards us rather than being sympathetic. I am proud of whatever I am doing today and want to reach great heights in future, a proud Saniya said. She also thanked her father who is a businessman and her mother,a homemaker,for being the pillars of support and encouraging her throughout.
Nod to community radio at PU
PU has received a licence from the Union government for setting up a community radio which will be operational from the coming session. Professor R C Sobti invited visually impaired students to participate and display their talent on the community platform.
