Private schools now in race to get minority status

The Supreme Court’s verdict, which exempts the private “unaided minority schools” from admitting 25 per cent children from economically weaker sections, appears to have become an advantage for certain city schools.

The Supreme Court’s verdict, which exempts the private “unaided minority schools” from admitting 25 per cent children from economically weaker sections (EWS),appears to have become an advantage for certain city schools.

For,a number of private unaided schools in the city are now in the race to attain minority status. While 11 city schools are already included in the category, there are four schools which are now going to apply for it.

These four are Vivek High School (Sector 38),St Kabir School (Sector 44),New Public School (Sector 18) and Gyandeep High School (Sector 20).

H S Mamik,Independent Schools Association (ISA) president and director of Vivek High School, said,“This idea is not new. Our schools had planned to attain the minority status under the Sikh reservation about six months ago. It does not mean that we want to get away with our social responsibilities. We only want to avoid the interference of the local administration in our management’s functioning.”

Further,S Deswal, principal of Gyandeep High School, said,“We are yet to determine the eligibility criteria for acquiring the minority status. When we are already preferring admission of Sikh students to our school,I feel we will be easily able to meet the requirements of the competent authority.”

When contacted,R D Singh, principal of New Public School, said,“Although the idea is not new to us,we are going to recommend our management to seek minority status.”

Sharing a similar response,Gurpreet Bakshi, administrator of St Kabir School, said if the school met the eligibility criteria,it would prefer to opt for the status.
