With just about two months to go for the Assembly elections in Punjab, the People’s Party of Punjab led by Shiromani Akali Dal rebel and former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal,is yet to get the symbol on which it would contest the polls. The party is hoping to get the symbol in another couple of days.

“As per the rules, the Election Commission will send us the symbol three days prior to the imposition of the election code of conduct. We are expecting the code to be in place by December 20 and thus the symbol should reach us in a day or two,” Manpreet, the PPP president, said. He said that the EC had sent a list of 200 symbols and the PPP had sent back 10 preferences. However,he refused to name the “preferences”,saying,it would be better that “we first get a clearance from EC and declare the symbol in the public.”

After its formation, the PPP was using Mashaal as its symbol, which does not find any space on the printed material of the party any longer. Meanwhile,Manpreet added that PPP would be the first party to release its manifesto and candidate list.
