Even five days after a man accused a Chandigarh Police head constable of abducting his wife, the police is ‘still enquiring’ into the case. For reasons best known to the ‘We care for you’ brigade,it has not even registered an FIR. The woman is still missing.

Except ordering a departmental enquiry, police have done nothing so far in the case. The outcome of the internal inquiry is also pending.

On August 25,Nandlal Giri, had complained to the Chandigarh Police alleging that head constable Bhoop Singh abducted his wife Kirti in his private vehicle. Giri had also submitted the registration number (CH-38T-0902) of Singh’s private vehicle.

Giri, who hails from Nepal, has been living in the city for the past seven to eight years and works as a cook. Giri married Kirti, his second wife,a month back. Denying the charges,Singh, however, claimed that he had been been falsely implicated. A departmental inquiry was set up against Singh after Giri had filed a written complaint with the Chandigarh Police.

However, till now the inquiry has not been completed. “An inquiry has been set up against Singh and we will be submitting a report to SSP UT in a day or two,” said Harjit Kaur, station house officer,Sector 3 police station.

Giri said,he was strolling in a park in Sector 8-B on August 21 with Kirti. Around 7 pm,head constable Bhoop Singh posted at a nearby police beat box, confronted the couple and asked them why they were at the park this late. Giri told Singh that they were married. Giri alleged that Singh harassed him and told him to go away. Singh then took Kirti to an unknown destination in his private car and since then Kirti is missing,Giri had alleged.

Earlier,Singh had rebutted the allegations saying,“I never took the complainant’s wife anywhere in my car. After questioning the couple,I let them go. I have no idea as to why the girl has not returned home.” However,Giri alleged that when he asked Singh about his wife’s whereabouts,Singh had said he dropped Kirti in a three-wheeler at her home.

“It is shocking. Why has the Chandigarh Police not registered an FIR? The law is clear. The Chandigarh Police should have first registered an FIR and then investigated the case. Why have special treatment for its own officers? Rather they should have been prompt in registering an FIR and completing their in house inquiry,” said high court lawyer Amar Vivek.
