The Chandigarh Police has procured a Vapour Detection Portable Equipment – EVD (Explosive Vapour Detector) to trace any explosives in the city. The police has already procured one EVD which is being used by the anti-sabotage checking team of the UT police for the security of VIPs in the city.
The Inspector General of Police (Chandigarh),Pradeep Kumar Srivastava said: It is a very handy device, weighting about two kilograms, which can detect and beep at any trace of multiple kinds of explosives. The device can also be used to detect drugs.
An officer from the security wing of the Chandigarh police said: The portable EVD is more sensitive and reliable at detecting explosives than any sniffer dog. The EVD can sample vapours directly via a nozzle and the results are available in seconds. The results are indicated on the LCD of the machine.
The EVD can detect all chemical explosives, chemical warfare agents and narcotics through the vapour mode.
Police said that the EVDs had been used during the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and the portable machines were also used during the high profile World Cup semifinal match between India and Pakistan in Mohali on March 30.
