Police conduct random checks on PU campus,50 detained

A week ahead of the forthcoming student council elections at Panjab University (PU),the Chandigarh police has stepped up security in the varsity with random checks on the campus against entry of outsiders

A week ahead of the forthcoming student council elections at Panjab University (PU),the Chandigarh police has stepped up security in the varsity with random checks on the campus against entry of outsiders.

On Tuesday,the Chandigarh police conducted a raid in the Boys Hostel No. 1,2,4 and 5 and rounded up around 50 youngsters after they failed to show their university ID cards.

“Most of these youngsters were those staying on a guest basis and were found to be relatives of the hostel’s residents,who came to the city for work,” said Professor Anil Monga,Chief Security Officer,PU.

Around 15 of these youngsters,identified on the spot,were found to be PU students who have not received ID cards yet,while the remaining 34 were taken to the police station in Sector 11 for identification.

Inspector Gurmukh Singh informed Chandigarh Newsline that the 34 detained youngsters were later let off after their particulars were recorded and their guardians informed.

“Our officials will visit the houses of these youngsters to identify if they were involved in some anti-social activity associated with the student elections,” said Singh.

In another such incident,the police detained 6-7 youngsters from the Student Centre,while they were campaigning for National Student Union of India (NSUI) on Tuesday. The youngsters could not produce their student ID cards and were taken to the Sector 11 police station for identification.

According to police,those detained were later found to be students of DAV College in Sector 10,who had come to be part of the election campaigning. They were later let off with a warning.

Will give PU a report : Police

The Chandigarh police has decided to submit a report to PU authorities giving details about the number of outsiders detained from the campus ahead of the elections. “We will submit the report and the university can then take action in this direction,since the entry of outsiders in the elections is banned to avoid any untoward incident,” said Inspector Gurmukh Singh.
