Cutting across party lines,Municipal Corporation councillors extended support to Devinder Singh Babla, their colleague from the Congress, and condemned the action taken against him.
Babla had recently been accused of anomalies in allotment of platforms in the Grain Market during his tenure as chairman of the market committee.
Congress councillor M S Chohan said: There were three persons who approved the allotment of platforms. Why is only Babla being targeted? It is unconstitutional. The official who signed the final list should also face action.
It was also mentioned that though the president of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee had earlier denied the partys involvement in the issue, the civic body members said they would stand by their fellow councillor.
Interestingly,BJP councillors also extended support to Babla.
Addressing the House,Babla said democratic heads in the city, including the Mayor, have no powers.
The allotment letter for platforms has signatures of three people, but only I am being targeted. We are representatives of the people. If this can happen to me,it can happen to anyone, Babla remarked.
