Remember the time when cassettes would just melt on the dashboard, crack under heat or spew the reel out? Those agonising moments of rewinding the reel were forgotten when compact discs were introduced, but soon enough they too got scratched. As for the good old radio,it wasn’t behaving like a good old pal. “The constant jargon of the radio jockey can get on your nerves, especially when you are snaking in and out of traffic, and want a decent number to calm the nerves,” says gemologist and adventure enthusiast Soli Sethi, who wanted to take control of the kind of music he wanted in his car. “I transferred my digital music files to the car stereo, with the pendrive coming to my rescue,” says Sethi,as he adjusts his songs according to the time, mood and road ahead.

Like Sethi, many Chandigarhians are treating themselves to the digital music experience in their cars. With cars equipped with enhanced features like built-in USB ports, bluetooth and ipod connectivity and card readers, the market is being flooded with hi-fi stereo systems. From storing tunes on iPods or memory cards to connecting them to compatible receivers, music in the car has never sounded so smooth. The big players also offer wired adapter or Bluetooth connection, which enables one to listen through the car speakers.

For business consultant Karan Khara, the SD card and aux wire have become his best friends. “No doubt the radio offers entertainment through an interactive format, but one needs to relax and enjoy the drive. That is when I put in the card and choose my files,” he says. The card, adds Khara is a memory card that can be used in a camera,a phone or stereo and costs around Rs 400. The aux wire is used to connect his phone to the car and help multitask. “I can rewind, forward, take calls, check text messages, and thanks to the speakers, the voice clarity is phenomenal,” he says.

NIFD president Aditi Srivastava was also tiring of lugging and fitting her CD pack in the car’s glove compartment. “It was getting cumbersome,so I decided to upload my favourite songs and put the USB port to good use in the car,” she says, choosing her music according to her mood. “It is a one-time investment, sparing you the nonsensical cackle on the air waves and is convenient,” she adds.

Sethi enumerates the convenience of a digital music collection. “You can store data on your drive or ipod, even memory cards are compatible. You can choose from a variety of adaptors, connection solutions, car stereos and enjoy.”

“Recently, there has been an increase in the number of people seeking a change in their car music system,” says Vivek Sood of Sai Auto Industries in Sector 28. A dealer in car audios and accessories,Sood says a good system can cost anywhere between Rs 6,000 and 12,000. An additional cost has to be incurred for the speakers. While the brands on the board are JVC,Pioneer,Kenwood,Aiwa and the evergreen Sony,Sood warns that car music systems need to be strong so that they can absorb the shocks of bad roads. Also, one has to keep them away from dust and humidity for longer life.
