PGIMER holds seminar on World Diabetes Day

PGIMER observed the World Diabetes Day on Saturday by organising a symposium,where professor J S Bajaj spoke on the ‘Diagnostic criteria and classification of Type-2 diabetes including prediabetes’.

PGIMER observed the World Diabetes Day on Saturday by organising a symposium,where professor J S Bajaj spoke on the ‘Diagnostic criteria and classification of Type-2 diabetes including prediabetes’.

He highlighted the role of insulin resistance in Type-2 diabetes mellitus and stressed on reducing this resistance by lifestyle modification such as weight loss and special group of drugs.

Professor A C Amini,Head,Department of Endocrinology,AIIMS,New Delhi stressed on individualisation of glycemic targets based on age of patient,duration of diabetes,presence of other co-morbid conditions and nature of drugs used.

Professor A Bhansali,Head,Department of Endocrionology,PGI,spoke on carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy.

Professor Amod Gupta,Head,Department of Ophthalmology,PGI,Chandigarh stated that diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the Western countries,accounting for nearly 10 per cent of all new cases of legal blindness in the patients between the ages of 45 and 74.

More than 50 faculty members and 150 delegates participated in the day-long academic proceedings. It was transmitted live to medical colleges in Rohtak,Shimla,Amritsar,Patiala and Faridkot.
