The clinical pharmacology unit was inaugurated at the Nehru Hospital in PGI today. CSIR Director General and Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Secretary Prof Samir K Brahmachari inaugurated building marking the institutes Foundation Day. The unit will be involved in clinical research especially on new drugs that are under development.
Such type of research is known as Phase-I clinical trials and is an important phase of development of new drugs. The unit is equipped with all the modern facilities for monitoring the effects of new drugs on human beings. It is highly skilled research and such facility is available at very few centres in India, said the PGI spokesperson. The first study to be initiated at the unit will be funded by the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI),Lucknow,which has developed a new drug that will be evaluated in the unit.
Telemedicine service to Sri Lanka soon
After linking Bhutan with the telemedicine project,the institute is all set to provide its expert services to Sri Lanka. Under the telemedicine project,the academic sessions and the patient consultation is provided online via satellite link to the places where such services are not available. The PGI is already providing services to health centres in Punjab.
One more case of suspected swine flu in city
One more suspected case of swine flu was admitted at the GMCH in Sector 32 on Tuesday. The 40-year-old,who is a resident of Sector 70 in Mohali,had recently returned from a trip to Thailand. The health officials said the condition of the patient is stable and his samples have been sent to NICD,Delhi,for confirmation. Meanwhile,the test reports of the 28-year-old resident of Sector 11 in Panchkula,who was admitted in the PGI have tested negative and the patient has been discharged.
