PFA shelter in complete disarray

A branch of People For Animals,an NGO which fights for animal rights, has been found to have been housing its own animals in undesirable conditions and using unsafe procedures and unhygienic equipment to operate on them.

A branch of People For Animals (PFA),an NGO which fights for animal rights, has been found to have been housing its own animals in undesirable conditions and using unsafe procedures and unhygienic equipment to operate on them. According to those running the center, low funds have forced the NGO to compromise on the condition of facilities.

The animal shelter in Khawajke village was started in 2004. Since then,no maintenance took place for years. Now,the operation theatre has turned into a junkyard and no autoclave was seen at the spot to sterilise the equipment before operating on animals. The stretcher used for the sick animals was found to be in a rusted condition. The recovery room next to the OT was lying empty with no bed inside. Only one out of the three ambulances used by the shelter to transport sick animals was found in working condition.

PFA officials blame limited resources. No upgradation has been done after the shelter was first set up and the equipment donated at the time has become obselete. The NGO claims to have no funds to buy more or to repair the old ones.

“At the moment we are not getting even a single rupee grant from the animal welfare board or any other organisation. Even the food of the animals is arranged through voluntary donations on a daily basis,” said Ajay Jain, president of PFA..

Jain however admitted that there are “serious shortcomings in the animal shelter” and that it “needs to be upgraded”.
