There is a certain spookiness that one associates with the eerie tunes of Delhi-based gypsy-jazz-cabaret-rock band,Peter Cat Recording Co (PCRC). Its as if they are singing an ode to the dead,or maybe theyre provoking the spirits a narcissistic and grotesque imagery. Now,complimenting their sound with an actual visual will be Love Demon the bands debut film that is set for release on July 13. No,no. Its Friday the 13th of July, corrects Rohan Kulshreshtha, bassist of the band. True to their self-consuming idiosyncrasies of tunes, the bands 52-minute film is about themselves. Last year as the four of them (Suryakant Sawhney,Rohan Kulshreshtha,Karan Singh,Anindya Shanker) drove from Delhi to Chennai to promote their much-appreciated album Sinema, they recorded the journey on a video camera. Videos of themselves busking, driving around,of the dog they met,the baba they jammed with in Goa and the haunted houses they visited form a part of the film. Eight to nine hours of this footage has been shrunk to create Love Demon. This film is not a documentary. Its also not only about our music, its about the band and its members, says Kulshreshtha. According to the band the1984 rock n roll film This is Spinal Tap is an inspiration for Love Demon. The trailer intrigues are these boys in the film going to murder someone? Will a scary face pop up anytime? Will the white sari bhootni of the 70s make an appearance? No. But there is the B R Chopra effect in the first scene that cant be missed. Like the Mahabharata used to start with that painted picture and a garland on it,similarly we asked Sameer Hazari, the painter to make a cat with a mic and a disco ball. And a garland on it, says Kulshreshtha. For those looking for PCRC classics such as Love Demon or Pariquel in the film, there is some disappointment as the film mostly has new tunes. Expectations are quite low from us,so whatever we get will be a bonus, jokes Kulshreshtha. On a serious note, however,he adds,We are the first band to have our own film and we are proud of it. After the online release next month, the film will be screened at alternative cinema spaces in Delhi,Mumbai and Kolkata. Till then they are working on their third album set to release at the end of this year.
