The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is all set to hold a second Punjab Sarkar-Kisan Milni (a meeting between the government and farmers) and NRI farmers’ conclave on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

A review meeting was held Tuesday at PAU to oversee the preparations for the smooth conduct of the May 11 meeting.

At the farmers’ conclave, as many as 15 progressive farmers from Australia, Canada, USA, Tanzania, and Zambia will share their experiences of farming on foreign lands and suggest novel ways of enhancing income. On May 12, the interface between NRI farmers and Punjabi farmers will be held at Sher Gill farm, Una road, Hoshiarpur.

Satbir Singh Gosal, PAU Vice-Chancellor, said that the second Sarkar-Kisan Milni has been planned after seeing the success of the first one in February. It is being held to make agriculture more effective, productive, and lucrative by addressing the farmers’ issues being faced in contemporary times, the VC said.

“The organisation of the milni and conclave aim at mitigating the effects of wide range of agrarian problems, especially those concerning natural resources like water depletion, discouraging the use of water-guzzling paddy varieties, and timely management of whitefly and pink bollworm in cotton in the current kharif season,” Gosal said.

Exploring and devising new strategies with thrust on long-term value creation to aid in farmers’ income will go a long way in giving a big push to agriculture, he added.
