‘Patchwork useless, need strong policy to control traffic’

Traffic ,especially vehicular,is inflating the tricity profusely. The traffic management, however,is hardly in sync with the growing chaos. Chandigarh and its satellite towns,Mohali and Panchkula, have interlinked so much with each other that there is massive inflow and outflow of traffic. The attendance in offices and educational institutions in the tricity has further given momentum to traffic, creating inconvenience in general and also instigating inefficiencies and health hazards.

Chandigarh itself has developed enormous congestion despite efforts like widening roads. Such patchwork,in face of the huge traffic,is of no consequence. The parking is not only inadequate but unsystematic, mainly due to little civic sense in the matter. If long-term vehicular policy is not formulated and some urgent actions not taken, the chaos may reach unmanageable proportions.

The following suggestions may serve some useful purpose.

* More office buses, before and after office hours, may be pressed into service for the provision of the employees. It will also discourage people to use private vehicles.

* Different types of buses (ACC/deluxe/ordinary),on cheaper rates, may be plied on roads for people from all walks of life. The Metro in Delhi has lightened the burden on roads.

* Buses on grid roads should run on five minutes’ frequency,on the lines of Ring Road buses in Delhi. This will enable the public to use them at will without bringing their own vehicles on to the roads.

* Advanced technologies like cameras,CCTVs,breath analyser should be used more commonly.

* Illegal parking (parking at unauthorised places) and disordered parking should be sternly dealt with by the traffic policemen as is done in UAE and other countries.

* Office-goers and college students should be motivated to use car pools to decongest roads. Regular users may be honored.

* It should again be assessed if metro trains/mono rails can be put to effective use in the tricity. Chandigarh, with its suburban areas,is a growing city. This should be kept in mind while thinking seriously to introduce measures to decongest roads. Traffic management should earn the highest priority on the working agenda of the administration.
