Parent Trap

Parvarrish, which replaces Kaun Banega Crorepati, isn’t a saas-bahu saga and that is what is most refreshing about the show.

What’s it about?

Parvarrish, which replaces Kaun Banega Crorepati, isn’t a saas-bahu saga and that is what is most refreshing about the show. It can be categorised as a family drama. But,it is essentially the story of two sisters,Sweety and Pinky, who are caught up in a sibling rivalry of sorts in their attempt to be a better parent to their child. Each has a different set of beliefs and a different take on how one needs to bring up their children. Pinky believes in being-a-friend-to-your-child philosophy, whereas Sweety believes in being a strict and disciplinarian mother. The show explores the universal concept of parenting.

Who’s in it?

The show boasts of a star cast of seasoned actors such as Shweta Tewari and Rupali Ganguly, who play Sweety and Pinky respectively. Vivek Mushran and Vishal Singh play their respective husbands,Lucky Singh and Jeet. Ashika Bhatia plays the role of Ginni, daughter of Sweety and Lucky Singh. Sparsh Khanchandani plays the character of Rashi, daughter of Pinky and Jeet. The show also has Rajesh Puri essaying the role of Pinky and Sweety’s father.

What’s hot?

The concept is the most novel part of the show. A story of nurturing, supporting and guiding children is a rarity on Indian TV. It is the story of real people with real emotions of parenting set in today’s times. Shows like Just Mohabbat and Hip Hip Hurray did tackle these issues in the ‘90s,but there has been a lull ever since. The screenplay is quite crisp as the show delves into the issues adolescents face with their parents — boyfriends, parties, nightouts, examinations. The children deliver an exceptional performance and are truly the show’s lifeline. A special mention must be made of Puri who lends his good humour.

What’s not?

The biggest drawback is the Punjabi accent most of the actors speak in. On most occasions, the accent looks forced, especially when Mushran tries speaking in it. Tiwari still has a “Prerna hangover”,which makes it difficult for the audience to see her in a different light. The show tries to look at the perils of parenting but at times,it goes a bit overboard with its script. While Tiwari’s paranoid behaviour and her obsession over her children looks a tad unreal,Ganguly’s overfriendly nature with her kids, and them bossing her around,is a little too callous.
