In the first case of swine flu reported from Panchkula, a registered medical practitioner from Sector 11 tested positive for the disease.
The 50-year-old patient had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the last three days.
The test report of her throat swab from the PGI, which became available on Wednesday, confirmed H1N1 infection. She has now been referred to Fortis Hospital, Mohali.
A spokesman for the government said the woman had been travelling for the last few weeks and had attended a wedding a few days ago, which is where she may have caught the infection.
Civil Surgeon Dr V K Bansal said, “People should take adequate precautions if they observe any flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, diarrhoea, vomiting and problem in breathing. Clean your hands, cover your mouth and stay away from overcrowded place.”
He added that people should not pay heed to rumours, and instead check with doctors if they have any symptoms.
