A thief who had been giving police the slip for nearly 10 months,in a petty case of stealing sanitary ware from a house in Sector 20 in 2007,was arrested on Friday. The accused, who jumped bail and had arrest warrants issued against him,was declared a proclaimed offender by the court. He was nabbed from his Sector 28 residence, which is a just a few kilometers away from the police station
The thief, identified as 26-year-old Mahinder, was arrested and later produced before a Magistrate on Friday, who remanded him to judicial custody. Interestingly, the police said he was arrested after they received specific information since earlier searches to nab him had proved unsuccessful.
Ishpal Singh, investigating officer in the case, said the thief had been working as a labourer in Kanpur (UP) due to which he couldnt be arrested earlier. He was arrested and remanded to judicial custody, he added.
Singh, however, said although Mahinder had jumped bail earlier,he was declared a proclaimed offender only in August. Some of his family members have been living in Sector 5 and some in Sector 28,including his wife. We arrested him on Friday after getting specific information, he added. According to police, the accuseds family members have been living in the Ashiana flats in Sector 28,provided to the economically weaker section of society by the Haryana government.
Police officials at the Sector 20 police station said a theft case was registered against Mahinder for stealing sanitary ware from a house. It was on 13 July that he was booked for theft and police slapped an addition case under section 174 A of IPC for avoiding appearance in the court.
After the court granted him bail in the theft case, the accused was not appearing in court even when he was summoned. The court had earlier issued warrants against him and as he couldnt be arrested he was declared a proclaimed offender, said a police official.
Police officials said that on Friday nobody appeared in the court on his behalf to provide for surety and he was remanded to judicial custody.
The court took a severe note of the accused avoiding appearance and send him to judicial custody, said a police official.
