NYC Flavours

If there ever was a survey on how many of us have relatives living in the US,Chandigarh would be a top contender. The New York skyline,its shopping destinations and the cuisine is something most of us are familiar with — having travelled there or having been updated by visiting cousins. When it comes to food,there’s more lining up American (read New Yorkers) plates than just pizza and burgers. At least that’s the take this new restaurant in city is trying to present. The first thing that strikes you as you enter Brooklyn Central,a gastro-pub,is its ambience. From the logo that represents the New York skyline to the dark,woody,industrial look of the interiors,it is a welcome change. The large chalkboard menu over the open kitchen,the list of subway stations,and Broadway inspired “Love NYC” signage give you a flavour of the city.

NYC is a melting pot of cultures and the menu represents that with American breakfast options,homestyle soups and starters,seafood specials,wood-fired pizzas,burgers,sandwiches and pastas. Apart from shakes and sundaes,there is an exhaustive bar menu as well. The restaurant also boasts of a steakerie. Our first pick was bacon-wrapped prawns that had comfort food written all over it. The variety of appetisers on the menu can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. Our recommendation would be the Brooklyn wingers. The platter of honey mustard chicken wings and peanut butter and jelly wings had us smacking our lips like schoolchildren enjoying a lolly. Having said that,we do wish the service was sharper.

An American line-up is incomplete without Mexican fare and if you are vegetarian,the grilled cottage cheese fajita is a good pick. For our main course,the meaty lamb steak marinated in home-made rub,and creole seasoning with mint and herb butter was good. The line-up of desserts doesn’t end at cheesecake and includes puddings,mousse and cakes. Even though the red velvet cake came highly recommended by the staff,we couldn’t fathom what the fuss was all about. The blueberry mascarpone trifle pudding is on our list though.
