Now,literary classics in Punjabi

Punjabi University will translate and publish Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell’s classic work,The History of Western Philosophy and Nelson Mandela’s autobiography,A Long Walk to Freedom,into Punjabi.

Punjabi University will translate and publish Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell’s classic work,The History of Western Philosophy and Nelson Mandela’s autobiography,A Long Walk to Freedom,into Punjabi.

A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of university’s standing committee for the development of Punjabi,held under the chairmanship of V-C Jaspal Singh,here on Tuesday.

The committee also decided to publish five classic plays —The Island by Athol Fugard,The Leader by Eugene Ionesco,Death in Installment by Janusz Krasinski,Riders to the Sea by John Millington Synge and Dumb Waiter by Harold Pinter—in Punjabi. Neil Simon’s work,The Old Couple,will also be translated into Punjabi and published by the university.

Speaking at the meeting,the V-C informed that the university has decided to prepare audio-visual recording of two Punjabi women folk dances,Giddha and Sammi,in their pristine form. Workshops in this regard are already going on by involving scholars and practitioners of these dance forms.

Two men folk dances,Bhangra and Jhoomar,have already been recorded on DVD format by the university.

The main objective of such efforts is to restore and preserve the original and authentic glory of these folk dances and save them from further damage,Singh said. A commemorative volume on noted Punjabi writer Santokh Singh Dhir was also approved to be published by the university,he added.

Amarjit Kaur,convener of the committee said scholars belonging to different fields were allotted the task of reparing books in Punjabi on various subjects,including computer science,social sciences,law,health,women and children. More than 30 projects related to various disciplines were also approved for publication.

Prominent among those who were present in the meeting were S P Singh,former V-C of GNDU,Amritsar,Gurbhjan Gill,president of Punjabi Sahit Academy,Punjabi writers Dalip Kaur Tiwana,Gulzar Singh Sandhu and others.
