Connoisseur of classical music were in for a melodious treat at the solo concert of Kolkata-based Hindustani vocalist Shampa Ghosh Choudhury that was organised by Pracheen Kala Kendra at Bhaskar Rao Indoor Auditorium,on Thursday,to mark the 158th Baithak Programme. Belonging to the vishnupur gharana,Choudhury is well-versed with diverse genres of music,including khayal,thumri,dadra,kajri,bhajan and ghazal and has received training in vocal music under the tutelage of Pandit Arun Bhaduri at the Sangeet Research Academy,Kolkata,and Banaras gharana exponents,Pandit Mohanlal Mishra and Vidushi Sipra Bose. While she commenced the concert with a dhrupad recital,her opening rendition in raga bihag was also impressive. Her vilambit khayal composition Kawann dhang tora,in ek taal,was followed by drut bandish Baje re mori payaliy,in teen taal. While handling the alaap badhat,Choudhury intelligently carried out her improvisations and she also proved her musical versatility in raga kedar and the concluding thumri in raga kafi Chharo dagar Banwari.
