Nose for news

What can one write about a man who has himself taken to writing!

‘Just like a journo,I change beats with my films’,admits Madhur Bhandarkar who is in the city to promote his new film – ‘Jail’

What can one write about a man who has himself taken to writing! But then director Madhur Bhandarkar has always shown a nose for news and we’ll say that even if he hadn’t made Page 3! He’s also one of those directors who will answer his own phone and take you on one-on-one without throwing unfair tantrums. That’s how Madhur Bhandarkar has always been. Ok,time to stop gushing and get to the point. Bhandarkar is back in action. He comes to Chandigarh after a whole year and as always it’s a much looked forward to visit. “Same time last year I was shooting ‘Fashion’ in and around the city,” mentions the director who is almost through with his next project titled ‘Jail’,jointly made by a Percept Picture Company and Bhandarkar Entertainment.

“Though the film still has time to release,I am getting the same feeling a child gets before an important exam.” And that’s coming from someone who has three National awards to his credit! “I am being honest. After all it’s a learning experience for me. That’s the way it is with each film,” spells out the director who will present yet another realistic take on life. “Jail is a sensitive tale of an ordinary man who gets stuck in a legal web. The story is a mix of both fact and fiction,” mentions the director who researched the story in jails across the country. “So far in Bollywood, jails have been shown to be larger than life. My view is more realistic,” he asserts. For his cast,Bhandarkar chose Neil Nitin Mukesh,Mughda Godse (she worked with him in Fashion) and Manoj Bajpai. “The film is from Neil’s point of view and tells the stories of several other inmates of the prison. It’s gives a ringside view of the world that exists inside the walls of the prison spread across our country,” explains the director as he adds,“Look out for Manoj Bajpai in the film.” While ‘Jail’ is expected to be released sometime near September-October,Bhandarkar is not planning ahead in terms of work. “People say I have all the qualities of a journalist and I couldn’t agree more. I change my beats as I flit from one genre to another. So the next one will obviously be different albeit a realistic one,” he sums it up for us.
