The State Election Commission has till now not given permission to the Municipal Corporation for starting certain development projects. The work of the civic body is on hold due to the code of conduct for the elections of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee.
The MC had sought permission from the election commission to allow some work to be undertaken. In wake of the code of conduct announcing new proposals, floating tenders, allotment of tenders and starting work that has not been started even though allottment is not allowed. This has brought work to a standstill.
During the House Meet held recently, the councillors had raised the issue that tenders are being floated by the Administration and in neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana where the code of conduct is also in place, the same should be allowed for the MC. The councillors had expressed concern that soon after the code of conduct ends, another one for the municipal elections will come into force.
Councillor Pardeep Chhabra had highlighted that the stock of cement with the MC had ended. To continue ongoing projects, cement is being borrowed from the UT Administration. This was because tenders for purchase of cement could not be floated. It was stressed that the civic body should seek permission for carrying on development work.
