NIA chargesheets key aide of 2 Khalistani terrorists in 2022 Punjab terror conspiracy case

Investigations have established the role of Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi in a conspiracy hatched by the Babbar Khalsa International terrorists to unleash terror in Punjab and other parts of the country.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday filed a chargesheet against a key associate of Khalistani terrorists Harwinder Singh Sandhu Rinda and Lakhbir Singh Landa in a Punjab terror conspiracy case of 2022.

The chargesheet against Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi of Tarn Taran district has been filed before special NIA Special Court, Mohali.

The NIA had identified the accused as an associate of foreign-based terrorists Harwinder Singh and Lakhbir Singh of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) organisation. Investigations by the anti-terror agency have established his role in a conspiracy hatched by the BKI terrorists to unleash terror in Punjab and other parts of the country.

The accused was involved in the Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack on Sarhali police station in December, 2022, as per NIA investigations. Probe revealed that Gurpreet had remained in contact with his foreign-based handlers from jail and even after his release from jail in that case.

NIA investigations have found that Gurpreet had conspired to raise funds for BKI and its operatives in India through large-scale extortion from businessmen on the directions of Lakhbir Singh. He had recruited vulnerable youth for the BKI terror module and had carried out recce of the targets identified by Landa and had made attempts to eliminate those targets.

The NIA, which had seized an illegal weapon from the accused’s house during a search operation in January this year, has charged him under various sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.
