The Chandigarh Aided College Teachers’ Association (CACTA) has decided to hold a massive protest Saturday outside the Senate meeting Hall of Panjab University (PU) to showcase the dissatisfaction over the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 without taking faculty members into confidence.

A Senate meeting is scheduled to be held on Saturday. Crucial decisions including the implementation of NEP 2020 are expected to be taken in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the executive members of CACTA condemned the PU authorities over the abrupt implementation of the policy in affiliated colleges and for taking “unfortunate decisions” in this regard without taking into account the Board of Governance and various faculty members from colleges.

CACTA president Dr Kulvinder Singh said it was surprising that dictatorial and completely biased decisions were being undertaken by the PU authorities in implementing NEP 2020, while keeping affiliated colleges in the dark. This, he said, forced them to take such an extreme decision.

Dr Singh said, “Colleges will have to face many difficulties in moving to the new system if PU authorities continue to move ahead with the abrupt decisions. We are highly apprehensive that the reshuffling or change in the teaching load…may lead to an unprecedented crisis in colleges.

CACTA secretary Dr Amitabh Dwivedi said they requested the PU authorities, members of various bodies and senators several times to seriously consider and examine the changes (subject-wise and curriculum-wise) before proposing and getting them implemented in the colleges. “Many ill-conceived decisions that are being taken can cause issues in the teaching load and create unwarranted consequences,” he pointed out.

Dr Sumit Goklaney, president of DAV College Teachers’ Union, said that along with the permanent faculty members, many ad-hoc (temporary) teachers are also teaching in colleges. “We humbly request the PU authorities to either hold back and suspend the decision of implementation of NEP for the time being, at least for the current session, in the colleges in order to get them fully prepared in every aspect. Or they can consider the concerns and suggestions for appropriate implementation of NEP in its true spirit and sense,” he said.
