The Nehru Park in Sector 22 sports a new look. It was here that former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had come when he had announced the creation of the city. But over the years, numerous exhibitions and rallies including the annual Ramleela festival, took its toll on the park.
Last year, the municipal corporation imposed a ban on holding rallies and exhibitions at the site. Ever since, the park was spruced up with a variety of fresh plantations. Pathways have been made; the parking area that had a problem of waterlogging during rains is being renovated.
New,covered garbage bins have been installed, replacing the old ones. The site had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which would now be tackled with. The park would also have a better lighting system now.
A resident of the area said that earlier, when they had visitors from outside the city, they wanted to see the Nehru Park for its historical significance. But they felt ashamed to show it. Most of them were disappointed with what they saw. Now the park is presentable,he added.
Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra said that the aim is to provide the residents with a place for recreation. We had been receiving complaints from the residents about the condition of the park. Keeping in view its historical value, the park has been given a facelift, he added.
