NDMA prepares ‘realistic’ scenario of Kangra earthquake, mock drill on cards

In a first-ever major exercise on disaster response,National Disaster Management Authority has prepared a ‘realistic scenario’ of the 1905 Kangra earthquake in Himachal Pradesh.

In a first-ever major exercise on disaster response,National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has prepared a ‘realistic scenario’ of the 1905 Kangra earthquake in Himachal Pradesh, which measured 7.8 on the richter scale,to hold a mega mock drill with the support of the Himachal Pradesh government, besides Punjab,Haryana and Chandigarh.

After holding a meeting with Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and top government officials,NDMA vice-chairperson Shashidhar Reddy told media persons that Sundernagar town of Mandi district had been chosen as the ‘epicentre’ for a 8.0 Mw magnitude earthquake.

“A realistic scenario of the earthquake has been generated with the help IIT Bombay and Madras along with NDMA experts. We have taken into account nearly 200-km long rupture line. Not alone Himachal Pradesh will suffer a huge devastation, but Jammu and Kashmir,Uttarakhand,Haryana,Punjab and Chandigarh, that have been involved in the exercise, will also suffer,” Reddy said.

By September this year, the experts will be able to complete the exercise on mapping the vulnerable areas and identifying lifeline services including hospitals and other response agencies.

Seismologist Professor A S Arya, who had reconstructed the earthquake scenario in 1992 on the pattern of 1905 Kangra earthquake, has projected a loss of nearly 90,000 lives during the day and 3.44 lakh at night,as most people will be at home.
