Music Makers

One is a Kashmiri Pundit, the other a Punjabi one. Together, they make up Midival Punditz. “There is no great philosophy behind our band, just great music,” say Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj,founders of one of India’s finest music bands,as they make their way into the newly-opened Punjab Grill in Sector 17.

“This is what we have been doing since 1998,” says Raj as Raina plays on. “Pardon the cliché but music is everything to us. All we want to do is create our own universe of music,” say the duo,on to their fourth album now.

The musicians are slightly amused when it is pointed out that Bollywood is often referred to as the mecca of music. Tucked away in Delhi, with best pals Jalebee Cartel and other upcoming groups and sounds, they feel that there is a far better quality of musicians, sound and instruments outside the ambit of Bollywood. “We’ve travelled all over the world and know it,” they say. Not that they have not been approached by filmmakers. “But we only compose when we have the creative freedom. With a film,it is usually someone else’s story, but we cannot let it be his/her music too,” Raj adds.

Their partnership works because they have known each other since middle school, sharing the same wavelength and chemistry. Like other musicians, piracy bothers them, and they look forward to a day when there will be well-defined laws to protect intellectual and creative property. “That’s why when we sell in India,we sell it cheap via downloads and CDs,” says Raj.

With more than a decade in the music business, how have they evolved? Right now,it is Indian electronica,Raj says, though they are keen to try out Jazz as well. “Our environment and travels are our inspiration. Let’s see where it takes us,” they say, taking to the stage again.
