Mukesh,Kahlon shine during round one

With identical scores of five under 65,Chandigarh 's Harmeet Kahlon and Mukesh Kumar of Mhow emerged joint leaders in round one of the Aircel-PGTI Players Championship at Kolkata on Tuesday.

Manav Jaini of the Delhi Golf Club took his score to 67 that placed him tied third along with M Dharma,Amardip Sinh Malik,Vinod Kumar,Pradeep Kumar and Kolkata’s Raju Ali Mollah.

Harmeet Kahlon,who began his round from the 10th,found himself at the top of the leaderboard thanks to his magnificent chipping and putting. He chipped to within a few feet for comfortable birdie putts on the 10th and 13th. Kahlon then sank monstrous putts from 30 feet,36 feet and 18 feet for birdies on the 16th,second and third,respectively. A chip to within six inches earned him another birdie on the seventh. The 39-year-old closed with a bogey on the ninth. Mukesh Kumar,like Kahlon,also fired six birdies and a lone bogey in his round one effort. Mukesh used the pitching wedge and lob wedge to great effect as he rarely left himself a long putt. He also holed a tough 15 feet birdie putt on the seventh. Feroz Ali Mollah of Kolkata,Digvijay Singh and Randhir Singh Ghotra are tied ninth at two under 68.

Kapila steers Hansraj academy to win
An impressive unbeaten knock of 98 from Yash Kapila enabled Hans Raj Cricket Academy,Panchkula to beat Tau Devi Lal Cricket Coaching Center,Panchkula by five wickets in the ongoing1st Under-15 Triangular Cup League cricket tournament organised by Hansraj Cricket Academy,Panchkula played in Panchkula on Tuesday. Batting first,Tau Devi Lal Cricket Coaching Center,Panchkula posted a total of 236 for the loss of eight wickets in 30 overs. Ankit Chaudhary smashed hard-hitting 137. However,his effortless century could not help his team win the match. Hans Raj Cricket Academy chased down the target in 27.3 overs,owing to Yash Kapila ruthless knock of 98 not out,which included 11 boundaries and three huge sixes. Earlier,he had taken two wickets also. He was given the man of the match award for his match-winning effort.

Sports function postponed
The Chandigarh Sports Department has postponed the function to honour 12 outstanding international sportspersons. It was scheduled for January 4 at 3.30 pm at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. According to a spokesperson of the Sports Department,the postponement was necessitated due to ‘some unavoidable’ circumstances. The new date will be announced soon.

Mahajan as national badminton coach
Surinder Mahajan,badminton coach of Sports Authority of India (SAI) posted at Punjab University at Chandigarh,has been selected as coach of the Indian badminton team which will participate in international badminton tournament to be held at Tehran from February 3 to 7.
