It’s a much-awaited annual fashion show in the city, and not just for the students of the Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD). While it’s an opportunity for them to showcase their creativity,it’s also a show that’s keenly looked at by industry professionals in the region. This year,INIFD’s “Designer Medley 2012” will feature a bouquet of 17 collections put together by students who are completing their BSc degree and Diploma Program in Fashion Design at INIFD Chandigarh. A preview was held yesterday and here’s what we made of it.

As in the past where students chose to dip back into history and heritage for their design themes, this year seems no different. Inspirations range from the Taj Mahal, handicrafts of Manipur to mosaic, the art of collage and mehendi. True to its name, the students have worked on collections that bring in all concepts of fashion like traditional wear, bridal wear, vintage and resort themes to Victorian silhouettes. Students have in many cases stuck to original mood boards. For instance,“Night Wish” by students Pallvi Dogra,Prerna Goyal,Shaveta Sharma,Bhavini Puri,Loveleen Chahal,Ashit Hastier and Jaspreet Kaur combines fantasy with reality. Based on the dreams of a girl who aspires to be a free bird, the colour palette for the collection is subtle with use of pastel tones of green,peach,red,off-white,lemon and lilac exuding femininity. The silhouettes highlight floor-kissing gowns with techniques like cutwork and layering of the fabrics. The collection by Krity Sethi,Harmanjot Kaur Saib,Harpreet Kaur and Kriti Gupta,on the other hand is inspired from the carvings and architecture of the Taj Mahal. The intricate work done in the domes and the jaalidar windows is depicted through laser cutwork and the intricate designing is represented through techniques like stencil and block printing. Another noteworthy collection is “Mosaical” by student designers Harpriya Kaur,Neha Guleria and Jasmine Chibber. The collection presents resort wear in which silhouettes such as palazzo pants, shift dresses and flowing skirts are enhanced with techniques of patchwork, laser work and cut work. The final showcase will roll out on July 28 with a bevy of leading models to walk the ramp.
