Expressing concern over depletion of values in all four estates of the country,Professor Prem Kumar Dhumal,Chief Minister,Himachal Pradesh, said we were passing through a crisis of credibility.
While inaugurating a two-day session on Media Needs Regulations or Self Regulation at Indian Media Centre (IMC),Dhumal said the fourth estate, media, could not be allowed to erode from within,as it would lead to the collapse of the system.
He deplored the tendency of suppression of press, but added that the changing trends in media were also a matter of concern.
He pointed out that paid news and breaking news were not healthy for the growth of society. When asked about his opinion on cricketer Sachin Tendulkars nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the Chief Minister said it was commendable decision.
Speaking on the occasion,Chandan Mitra,MP and Chairperson of IMC,said it was a matter of public debate whether ownership of media organisations should be vested in the hands of individuals or groups. Profiteering cannot be the only objective behind running a media organisation, Mitra added.
Shyam Khosla,IMC Director,in his opening remarks said media was passing through a critical phase, and the only way to overcome it was to maintain professional ethics.
PC Dogra, former Director General of Police,Punjab, and IMC Vice-Chairperson,and Professor KN Pathak, former Vice-Chancellor,Panjab University, were also present.
