A 20-year-old man was injured when he tried to break the barriers set up by the traffic police on the main road of Sector 16 on Tuesday.

Let off after first aid; no case registered

A 20-year-old man was injured when he tried to break the barriers set up by the traffic police on the main road of Sector 16 on Tuesday. However, the police did not book him for any offence and he was let off after administering first aid.

The incident occurred around 11 am when Swatantra Kumar,a resident of PGI in Sector 12,Chandigarh,was going to Sector 16 after collecting blood samples from a doctor in Baltana. The district traffic police had set up three barriers on the main road. As Kumar was driving at a high speed, the policemen tried to intercept him on the first barrier but he did not stop. As he broke the second barrier, one of the policemen deployed at the third naka pushed the barrier in his way. Eyewitnesses said Kumar collided with the barrier and was hit in the face. Huge drama prevailed at the barrier as the onlookers alleged that the police were at fault for trying to catch a traffic violator in this manner.

Kumar was later taken to General Hospital,Sector 6,by the police where he was discharged after first aid. The police, meanwhile, were defensive of its action claiming that they were duty bound. “The boy was over-speeding which is why we stopped him. He knew that he was at fault that is why he tried to run away. We were simply doing our duty and did not intend to harm him,” said an officer.
